Children who are obese are more likely to be obese as adults, and are at risk for developing serious, life-shortening chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, and several types of cancer. The earlier children can learn healthy eating and physical activity habits, the better for their long-term health. Because most infants and young children regularly spend much of their time in non-parental child care, child care settings provide a unique and important opportunity to address the childhood obesity epidemic.
